Known as York House, 50 York Street dates to around 1885, when it was constructed as a six-storey warehouse. Its Victorian Free Classical facade and lofty entrance retain a distinct presence on the street. Positioned between Wynyard and Town Hall, it places us close to the clients and properties we work with every day.
Suite 601 had the qualities we look for in a property. High ceilings, exposed brickwork and windows facing east and west gave it character and light. The existing layout did little to make the most of either, with enclosed rooms interrupting the floor and separating its best features.
Working with Intermain, we set a straightforward brief. Preserve the character, improve the flow and create a workplace people would enjoy spending time in.
Central walls were removed, allowing light to move through the suite. Existing ceilings and selected glazed partitions and doors were retained, connecting the new interiors to the building’s earlier life. A Pause and Meet space now welcomes visitors, while a kitchen with a stone island forms a natural gathering point at the centre of the office. It has quickly become where most of the good conversations happen.
An eight-seat boardroom, four-person meeting room, private office and curtained call room accommodate different ways of working. Workstations sit along the windows, with a glass brick screen separating the kitchen from the desks while allowing light through.
